HERMANN SCHWAHN

HERMANN SCHWAHN
1927 Heidenheim, Germany – 2003
Hermann Schwahn’s astonishing artistic oeuvre, which is divided into the areas of sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking and design, represents a rich diversity of work. It is full of hints and visions of oneself and the world, a contribution to global knowledge.
Hermann visited the Stuttgart Academy of Art and took part in the debate on art (in the post-war period), where abstract art and informal art were discussed. Schwahn sought out the object, simplified it, deformed it and at the same time developed the abstract formal language in applied graphics, which has retained its power and relevance.
The light and clarity of Tuscany inspired him to the landscape and he captured it in an unmistakable language.
He was particularly inspired by the numerous representations of animals and enthusiastic about the Palio in Siena, a horse race, the artist has been creating small sculptures since 1978, especially representations of horses and cows.
By drawing horses over and over again, modelling them in wax, casting them in bronze, chiseling and patinating them, or painting the landscape in pictures, he becomes part of this other world.
Praised and admired by collectors as a painter of the objective world, for his constructivist play on forms and above all as a sculptor.
